No one would ever miss having modaks , during the Ganesh festival, they are high in calories, but still the nutrition we get from coconut & jaggery can't be avoided. Fresh coconut is a quick source of energy & it also improves digestion & absorption of nutrients. It also keeps your skin & hair healthy. Jaggery is also a good source of iron, thus good for anemic. If we neglect the number of calories, then 1 modak a day is always better than the chocolates or sweets which we get in the market.

INGREDIENTS:
For Outer Layer 
  • Rice flour - ½ cup
  • Water - 1 cup 
  • Salt - a pinch
For The Filling
  • Freshly grated coconut - 2 tsp
  • Grated jaggery - 1 tsp 
  • Raisins [optional] - 5 or 6
  • Cardamom powdered - ½ tsp
  • Poppy seeds - ½ tsp
  • Ghee - 1 tsp 
  • Nutmeg powder - 1 pinch 
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1 Heat ½ tsp ghee in a non-stick pan over a medium flame. Step 2 Add grated jaggery and coconut and sauté for about 3-4 minutes. Step 3 Add the roasted poppy seeds, grounded cardamom, nutmeg powder. Mix well for about a minute. Remove in a bowl and keep aside. For the dough: Step 4 For the dough In a vessel add water along with ghee and a pinch of salt. Bring it to a boil and then add the rice flour. Stir it continuously to prevent lump formation. Step 5 Cook this mixture on a low heat for about 2- 3 minutes. Once cooked, remove the dough in a plate. Allow it to coul to room temperature. Step 6 Now knead the dough into small balls. If the dough looks dry or hard add little warm water and knead the dough till it is completely smooth and pliable Rest the dough and cover it with a damp cloth. Assembling & Steaming Ukadiche Modaks Step 7 Take a ball of dough and begin stretching it in your hands forming a disc of about 3-4 inches in diameter. Step 8 Once done, add the coconut-jaggery filling in it. Step 9 Pinch the edges of the disc then bring together all the pinched fulds in the center to give it the classic modak shape. Step 10 In a steamer, place the modaks and steam for about 10-15 minutes or till done.
